Raja Nazrin proclaimed as the 35th Sultan of Perak


Raja Nazrin Shah, the eldest son of the late Sultan Azlan Shah, has been proclaimed as the 35th Sultan of Perak.

The announcement was made by Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja Gen (retired) Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin before the remains of the late Sultan at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar this afternoon.

Raja Nazrin was the Raja Muda of Perak since 1984.

The Dewan Negara held a special meeting yesterday evening to determine the successor to Sultan Azlan Shah.

Sultan Azlan Shah, 86, passed away at 1.30pm yesterday at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur.

Raja  Nazrin, 57, holds a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Worcester College, Oxford.

He did his Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard, and obtained a doctorate in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.

The new Ruler has also written articles and spoken on a wide range of issues including the role of the constitutional monarchy in Malaysia, education, Islam, ethnic relations and economic development.

He has been Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya since 1989 and is the chairman of the Board of Governors of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar.

Raja Nazrin is married to Tuanku Zara Salim Davidson and have a prince Raja Azlan Muzaffar and a princess, Raja Nazira Safya Shah.
