Jakim confirm Cadbury chocolate is Halal

Bangi: Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim ) confirms Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut Chocolate and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond halal for consumption by Muslims because it does not  contains the DNA of pig.

It is based on tests by the Department of Chemistry of the same product samples taken directly from the factory in Shah Alam on 26 May, although the Ministry of Health laboratory previously discovered pig DNA in the product.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom , when announcing yesterday said that although there are many laboratories , Jakim laboratory only recognize the Chemistry Department in Petaling Jaya for the purposes of pig DNA findings verification.

"The results received from the Department of Chemistry this morning ( yesterday ) found both samples taken by JAKIM which is Roast Almond with batch number (batch number ) 221 013 N01RI1 and Hazelnut varieties with batch number 200 813 M01HI2 , DNA negative for pork DNA and halal for muslim consumption.

“Department of Chemistry Laboratory also tests on the four samples of other products and raw materials with possibilities contain five animals in the processing chain also found no pig DNA, " he said at a special press conference on the issue yesterday.

On 24 May, JAKIM suspend the halal certification after two Cadbury chocolate products certified by the Ministry of Health containing pig DNA (Porcine) , effective immediately.

This follows the detection of Porcine DNA in two samples of Cadbury chocolate , the milk chocolate with hazelnuts - Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut with batch number ( batch number ) 200 813 M01HI2 and milk chocolate with almonds - Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond with batch number ( Batch No. ) N01R 221 013 , expiration date January 15, 2015 .

Competent laboratory

Jamil Khir said the lab Chemistry Department gazette as food laboratory competent in food analysis , as well as accredited under the Department of Standards Malaysia Malaysian Laboratory Accreditation Scheme based on MS ISO / IEC 17025 : 2005 for DNA testing , including testing the processed food products .

However , Jamil has not ruled out the samples analyzed by the laboratory Ministry of Health is not taken directly from the factory and pig DNA contaminated either during the process of storage and transmission.

“Contamination may occur from the fridge. In fact, if a person eats food that have elements of pig DNA and then sneezed in front of other foods, food can also be contaminated with the DNA of a pig, “he said.

However, he said the government had no intention of protecting anyone and never hide the real status to avoid sin.

Comprehensive examination

He said a thorough report will be presented before the Malaysian Halal Certification of the two products to be returned.
