Petaling Jaya: The government is trying to attract international investment in biomedical engineering, said the General Secretary of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry ( MITI ) , Datuk Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria .
“We need to take advantage of our location (central region), resources and support available from the government.
"We have become the hub of the Asia Pacific (for this technology). We just need to encourage more companies (investing here), "he said after a visit to Materialise Sdn Bhd here yesterday.
Materialise is a company based in Belgium that plays an active role in the manufacture of additives for industrial and medical use, providing solutions and clinical research, such as surgical simulation and medical image processing.
Rebecca said the development of the industry in Malaysia is still in its early stages and there is great potential in various parts, especially medical tourism.
Investment potential
"There is the potential for synergies and we hope to bring those parties together. We also hope that the investment arm of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) will look to investments that help us work together more with what we have here, “he said.
He said the development of the industry also provides a great opportunity for students in the field.
“The field of biomedical engineering is still new in Malaysia and opportunities for our students are enormous," he said.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of MIDA, Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Jusoh, said they find the right approach to attracting investment in printing 3D (three-dimensional).
