9 drowning, 26 still missing in the waters of the Air Hitam River

PORT KLANG– Hopes of 97 illegal immigrants (PATI) of Indonesia to celebrate Ramadan next week with the family in their hometowns, are inaccessible when their wooden boat sank off the coast of the Air Hitam River, Pulau Carey, last night.

Incident about 12:21 midnight causing 26 of them was reported missing and until 7pm only nine bodies were found, with seven men and two women.

The remaining survivors consisted of 49 men, 12 women and a girl.

It is understood that the said boats can only accommodate 50 to 60 passengers at a time, the wreck was not until half an hour after taking off from a jetty in Pulau Carey heading for Indonesia.

Operations Coordinator-General of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime Malaysia) Klang, Lieutenant Commander Mohd. Hambali Yaakup said he did not rule out the possibility of the boat capsized due to overloading and leaks caused by bumping into a sandbar.

According to Mohd. Hambali, the work of search and rescue (SAR) including assistance team of divers will be continued until all the victims were found.

"The distance from the mainland is the scene about 200 meters and believed all the survivors are trying to escape from the authorities. Boating is also believed to be operating illegally," he told reporters here today.

Some of the survivors brought to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for a medical examination, while the corpses are sent to the Banting Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, in a separate news conference Kelanang Beach Fishing Pier, Morib, Kuala Langat district police chief Supt Azman Abd. Razak The police are investigating the background of all the victims because they have no travel documents themselves.

The police also are in the middle of investigating a boat owner involved.

He added that all the victims were detained for investigation under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons (ATIP) Act 2007.
