Defense Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the main issue is the safety of the South China Sea and defense policy among the countries that benefit all parties.
He said Malaysia has been consistent in ensuring the success of ASEAN in the areas of economic and strategic aspects of the military, as well as its efforts to strengthen the regional security cooperation.
“Like many others, I care situation in the South China Sea.
"However, the attitude of increasing pressure and noted that the differences will not provide any benefit to the country.
Should mutual respect
“This issue requires confidence and mutual respect. It will take time, but with patience, wisdom and courage, we can solve it together, “he said.
He said this while delivering a speech on Asia Summit Defense Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) 13th: Shangri-La Dialogue here yesterday.
Hishammuddin says, it does not mean that the member states have to adopt an equal military policy.
What is needed, he said, is that military policy that can be implemented effectively and enable cooperation between the security forces.
Safety first
“We need to prioritize security in the region as a whole and not just thinking about the boundaries and sovereignty only.
“ASEAN should unite in a number of important defense issues and not choose their own path. We need to have effective communication channels and intensive basis as a group, “he said.
The region which has about 600 million people and gross domestic product (GDP) reached RM6.4 billion is seen as a major potential Asia in the future.
