New system to sell cheaper diesel, petrol to be introduced, says trade ministry

The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) has assured that a new and more efficient system to sell subsidized diesel and petrol to eligible commercial vehicles would be introduced.

Bernama reported its secretary-general Datuk Seri Alias Ahmad (pic) as saying that the new system was expected to reduce the government's expenses by about RM9 to RM10 billion a year.

"The new system will prevent loopholes and smuggling of subsidized diesel and petrol. Wait for the time...we will announce. But we hope by this year or the fourth quarter, it can be implemented," he told reporters after attending the ministry's monthly gathering organised by the Malaysian Cooperatives Commission today.

Bernama quoted Alias as saying that the ministry would also announce the states that have been identified as active areas in petrol and diesel smuggling, next week.

"(Among them are) Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Sabah, Sarawak and Johor. We found there was a tendency in the border states for smuggling across the border, and we are monitoring the petrol stations near the industrial areas and have not made a decision yet. The border areas are definitely in our radar," he said.

Bernama reported that KPDNKK had earlier limited the sale of diesel and petrol in petrol stations along the Kelantan-Thailand border to 600,000 litres a month in a move to curb smuggling activities.

He said the quota was introduced as an initial step to curb abuse of subsidized diesel and petrol until a new system which was more efficient was introduced. - TheMalaysianInsider
