Selangor PAS ask MAIS remove executive powers

Kuala Lumpur: PKR Selangor PAS urged the government to abolish the executive authority of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), which is responsible for taking care of the affairs of the Muslims in the state, following the agency's refusal to return the Malay version of the Bible possessed.

Shah Alam’s MP, Khalid Samad, said the opposition-led state government should do the amendments to the enactment of authorizing the executive to MAIS because some of the agency’s action is considered contaminate the royal institution in the state.

He said the executive functions and powers conferred to the MAIS create confusion in the administration of the state.

Review the executive functions

"PAS’s MP hopes the Selangor government study back the role and power of the MAIS and returning to government policy or constitutional monarchy.

"We also hope that executive power does not grant to the royal institution as it possibly can defile the institution itself. Review the executive function so as not to confuse MAIS administration or damage the image of Selangor sultanate of Selangor, "he said.

Elaborating Khalid said, MAIS decision was tarnish the image of Islam in society and give the impression that we do not respect the holy books of other religions.

On Thursday, the Chief Minister of Selangor, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in a statement ordered the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) which is under MAIS return all confiscated Bibles to the Bible Society of Malaysia.

Directive made the Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail told there is no prosecution in respect of the seizure of the Bible and the case was closed because the seized copies of the book is a compilation of the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel primer also Christians.
