Licence revoked for 91 MLM companies

KUALA PILAH: A total of 91 direct selling and multi-level marketing (MLM) licences have been revoked between 2003 and July 1 this year, for multiple offences including cheating.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said the majority of the offenders were in violation of the Direct Sales and Anti-Pyramid Scheme Act 1993.

"Direct selling or MLM is among the popular marketing method in the country. However, it becomes an offence when there are those who try to make easy money through fraud," said Hasan at the breaking of fast with Seri Menanti community and Yayasan Sahabat members at Kampung Galau, Seri Menanti here.

He said individuals conducting direct selling business without a licence face a fine of RM250,000 or five years imprisonment or both for the first offence and a fine of RM500,000 or 10 years imprisonment or both for susequent offences.

Hasan said direct selling or MLM has become a competitive and important industry that generates revenue for the country's gross domestic product (GDP) economy.

Currently, a total of 452 companies are registered under the Direct Sales and Anti-Pyramid Scheme Act 1993. - NST
