Although Swedish artist Richard Winkler’s creative development charts a course that is not dissimilar to other artists who settle in Bali, he has succeeded in doing what few foreign artists in Indonesia can do.
Art lovers and collectors alike quickly recognized Winkler’s work and he created a niche within the large, yet difficult to penetrate, Indonesian contemporary art market.
Richard Winkler was born in 1969 in Norrkoping, Sweden, and studied graphic design and illustration at the Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. For some years, he worked as an illustrator in advertising and magazines. In 1997, he moved from Europe to Ubud to become a full-time painter. His work is a metaphor for the omnipotent fertility of the universal and celebrates the beauty of Bali.
Winkler’s work will be on display at Bazaar Art Jakarta 2014 in the ballroom, Ritz Carlton at Pacific Place, Jakarta, from July 17-20. - Jakarta Post
