The Special Command for the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers, or VRAEM, region in southern Peru detected a “Cessna narcoplane with registration CP-2890 that came from Bolivia” at 11:00 a.m. Saturday near the Valle smeralda counter insurgency base in the Tambo district of Satipo province, the command said in a statement.
Military aircraft were conducting patrols over clandestine landing strips near the Apurimac and Ene rivers when they spotted the small plane.
The “aircraft of the forces of order tried to persuade the narcoplane to land,” but “it took evasive maneuvers, leading to the crash,” the Armed Forces Joint Command said.
Armed forces and National Police patrols launched a search and rescue operation, but there are no reports of arrests or deaths in connection with the crash.
Drug traffickers and the remnants of the Shining Path guerrilla group operate in the coca-growing VRAEM region. – Bernama
