40,568 patients could benefit from school children in hospital


KUALA LUMPUR- Establishment of the School of In-Hospital (SDH) in 10 government hospitals across the country have allowed a total of 40.568  patients get benefit  in the period from July 2011 to March 2014.

Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said, the three other SDH will be created in Negeri Sembilan, Sabah and Sarawak by the end of this year to meet its obligations to provide education to children with health problems.

However, he is also the Minister of Education said, SDH will be establish more in the future as  the year of 2012 statistics show the number of patients aged five to 19 years in government hospitals is more than 200,000.

"This shows that we need to work harder to create more SDH stages across the country to benefit more patients students," he said when opening the SDH Phase 2 and Phase 3 at Selayang Hospital here today.

SDH established in Phase 2 is the Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru, Johor; Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh, Pahang; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (PPUKM), Cheras, Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, while SDH Phase 3 is the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar, Johor; University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and Hospital Selayang.

Also present were the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister who is also the patron of Conscience Project: SDH, Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman; wife of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd. Ali; Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam and Deputy Minister of Education II, P. Kamalanathan.

According to Muhyiddin, the close cooperation between the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and non-governmental organizations, the Foundation has developed Nurul Yaqeen SDH was originally started in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Ampang and Serdang Hospital.

"Our sincere thanks to the Ministry of Health, particularly the Minister of Health for their commitment to provide space for SDH in new hospitals buildings with a bed capacity of 500 or more," he said.

He said, his ministry will also establish a dedicated training center at the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Kota Bharu Campus, Kelantan to train SDH teachers to be more structured and comprehensive.

He said, edutainment-based approach used in the teaching and learning process in SDH and relaxed learning environment a positive impact on patient recovery process of children.

"SDH can be considered as a therapy for pediatric patients of the treatment process that is not a pharmaceutical, but the psychological approach, this will indirectly help promote their healing process," he said.
