RM150 millione-vouchers GST as SME incentives

Kuala Lumpur: SME Corp Malaysia allocated RM150 million in the form of e -vouchers for Goods and Services Tax (GST)with the value of RM1 , 000 as incentive to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The vouchers can be used to buy or upgrade accounting software that complies with the GST.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri NajibRazak, who announced the application of e-vouchers opened yesterday, said it was to ensure that the transition to the GST among SMEs run smoothly.

“What SMEs need to do is send an e - voucher application online and then use it to buy the software from the vendor appointed.

"I ask the SMEs to come forward and take advantage of the assistance provided by the government to ensure a smooth transition in the implementation of the GST,” he said at the opening of the SME Annual Exhibition (SMIDEX) 2014 here yesterday.

Application for e - voucher is open until December 31 and can be redeemed prior to February 28, 2015. Ministry of Finance is to appoint 55 vendors selling accounting software needed by SMEs.

Terms eligible for applying e -vouchers

Three criteria that qualify a company for e - voucher is must comply with the SME definition set by SME Corp , GST registration number and at least 51 percent equity owned by Malaysians.

The Prime Minister said Malaysia can learn from 160 countries which are already facing many challenges when implementing and understanding the GST system.

"The government has allocated RM100 million to implement training and awareness program (GST) in the country through various channels, " he said.

Najib also announced the SME Corp will work with the Securities Commission (SC) to establish Plat -form Unlisted Trading Commission ( MyULM ) to open access to new financing opportunities for SMEs .

He said the platform is to facilitate the growth and expansion of SMEs through the capital market.

“Smaller companies are facing the challenge of entering the capital market as it is required a lot of need and cost to be listed. To make it easier, SC last year announced the creation MyULM to provide access to capital and information to assistthe transactions, “he said.

The Prime Minister also said the government spent RM13 billion for SME development program this year compared RM12 billion last year.

"The fund is not only come from the government but it alsocontributed by the private sector. In fact , nearly 50 percent of the funds from this year's program from the private sector , " he said.

At the event, Najib handed inaugural and a cash prize of RM1 million to KLSMC Stem Cells Limited as it is selected as the Most Innovative SMEs. Earlier, the Prime Minister becomes witness of some public-private partnership through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between SME Corp and the Department of Standards Malaysia, Cement Holdings Bhd and Malaysia Debt Ventures Berhad.
