Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Abdul Taib told the Kuala Lumpur Shariah High Court today that his estranged wife, Shahnaz Majid, was not a virgin when they married in 1992.
"A few days after our wedding on January 9, 1992, I discovered she was no longer a virgin.
"She was not a virgin when we were married," said Abu Bekir, son of Sarawak Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.
He was responding to his lawyer Datuk Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar's question on the RM100 million muta'ah, or Islamic conciliatory payment, that Shahnaz was seeking from him.
Shahnaz, sister to popular singer Datuk Sheila Majid, married Abu Bekir in January 1992. They have a 20-year-old son.
Abu Bekir filed for divorce from Shahnaz on May 11, 2011.
He had on June 3 told the court that he was happily married to Shahnaz but the marriage turned sour when she started to question his movements a few years later.
"She would always speak politely in the beginning but towards the end of 1994, she became rude and would speak harshly to me in front of my friends and staff at the office.
"She would check my phone calls and would ask our driver about my movements," he said when asked by Zainul. - TheMalaysianInsider
