Azizul Raheem Awalluddin, a Tourism Malaysia director in Stockholm, was released from Swedish custody at around noon local time (around 6pm in Malaysia) yesterday.
A source from the Tourism Ministry confirmed Azizul’s release, saying that he sounded “tearful and grateful for regaining his freedom”.
The source said Azizul had applied for a week’s leave to settle his affairs in Sweden before returning to Malaysia.
Another source close to the family in Sweden said Azizul would be returning to Malaysia by July 15 to make it in time for the Raya holidays with his children.
Azizul is not expected to remain in Sweden to wait for the release of his wife Shalwati Nurshal, who was convicted of the same offence.
Shalwati has three months left to serve in prison as she was found guilty of hitting all four children, while Azizul was found innocent of beating their youngest son.
On March 28, the Solna District Court jailed Azizul for 10 months and sentenced Shalwati to 14 months in prison.
The parents are to serve two-thirds of their sentence with a further reduction of three months due to the time that they had already spent in detention during trial.
This means that Azizul spent three months in prison while Shalwati has to serve six months.
The court also ordered Shalwati and Azizul to respectively pay their children 67,200 SEK (RM31,320) and 36,400 SEK (RM16,960).
On Feb 10, Shalwati and Azizul were charged with multiple counts of gross violation of a child’s integrity by hitting and abusing their children.
The offences took place in the family’s home in Spnga, a Stockholm suburb, between Sept 15, 2010 and Dec 17, 2013. - The Star Online
